50 años del lanzamiento del chimpancé Ham

Ham el astrochimpacé...El chimpancé Ham fue enviado al espacio por los Estados Unidos el 31 de enero de 1961. Viajaba en una cápsula dentro de un cohete Redstone, como parte del programa Mercury. Ham pertenecía a un grupo de cuatro chimpancés entrenados en el Centro de Medicina Aeroespacial Holloman (Nuevo México), donde había aprendido a accionar algunas palancas a medida que se activaban determinadas luces. El vuelo duró casi 18 minutos, el animal permaneció en ingravidez 6,6 minutos y la cápsula aterrizó en el Océano Atlántico, a 679 km de distancia del punto de despegue. Afortunadamente, encontraron a Ham sano y salvo.

Unos meses después, Yuri Gagarin se convertía en el primer humano que conseguía viajar al espacio, a bordo de la nave Vostok .

CERN announces LHC to run in 2012

CERN has announced that the LHC will run through to the end of 2012 with a short technical stop at the end of 2011. The beam energy for 2011 will be 3.5 TeV. This decision, taken by CERN management following the annual planning workshop held in Chamonix last week and a report delivered today by the laboratory’s machine advisory committee, gives the LHC’s experiments a good chance of finding new physics in the next two years, before the LHC goes into a long shutdown to prepare for higher energy running starting 2014.
